First 30 Days

Your first few days on the job will have requirements that vary for each person depending on your role and job location.

All employees must complete mandatory annual training, available through our learning portal, Helix.

If you're enrolling in benefits, it is essential you complete enrollment within your first 30 days of employment. A benefits specialist will contact you within your first week to set up a personal meeting to review your options.

Depending on your job location and type, you may need to complete parking registration and set up your email and phone.

You will learn more about these tasks in your Day 1 orientation session. This section will help you find your way around other health system resources and requirements.

Employee benefits

The health system invests in robust benefits to support all employees and their families. Please explore and understand your benefits because they make up an important part of your total rewards package. From health and wellness, to financial peace of mind, to services that help you balance the demands of work and personal obligations, you will find benefits available to help you take care of you.

For full details about the benefits package, review this 2025 benefits enrollment guide.

Free benefits for all employees

Many important benefits including wellness, the Employee Assistance Program, exclusive shopping discounts, professional development resources and cash awards for certification are provided free to all employees, even those who work less than 0.5 FTE and are not eligible for other benefits.

Enrolling in benefits

New benefits-eligible employees will have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with a benefits specialist about the benefits package. You will be contacted within your first week on the job to arrange the meeting. New employees have 30 days from the date of hire to sign up for benefits. More information will be provided in Day 1 of Orientation and in the meeting with the benefits specialist.

Where to find benefits information

The Benefits Connection website at KansasHealthSystemBenefits.com is the one-stop information source for all benefits. The website is open to all employees, spouses and dependents. You do not need a password or health system network access to visit.

Required training for new employees

New employees are assigned mandatory training that is to be completed within 10 days of your hire date. Requirements vary by role, depending on whether your role is clinical or nonclinical, and will include courses related to safety, privacy, ethics, information security and more.

The courses are available in Helix, the health system's online learning resource. You can access Helix from the homepage of 24/7, the health system's Intranet. Log in using your health system credentials (the same username and password you use to log in to health system resources). Helix is a great resource for your entire career with the health system, supporting your growth and development with bite-size learnings and in-depth courses on a wide range of topics.

You will receive an email from AskHelix@KUMC.edu informing you of your individual training requirements as a new employee. If you have questions, your co-workers are a great resource – everyone completes the training each year!

Register to park for your work location

Once you receive your health system email address and ID badge, register to park at your work location if you are working at the 39th and Rainbow campus, Westwood or CRC/Fairway. You will then be assigned to your parking location.

Call Parking Services at 913-588-5175 if you have any questions about parking.

Military veterans

To ensure access to certain benefits, please inform the health system if you are a veteran of the U.S. military. Indicate your veteran status in Workday. Read here for full instructions.

You may be interested in participating in our Employee Resource Group for veterans (network access required). The group’s purpose is to honor veteran and active reservist employees as well as patients who are veterans. Whether you were Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Reserves, National Guard or Coast Guard, we hold you in high regard for your dedication to our country. As with the military, we are stronger when we work together.

The Veteran Resource Group has created "Veteran" badge tags that you can proudly wear along with your employee badge. Please provide the requested information at this link to obtain your "Veteran" badge tag.
