HURT! App for After-Hours Injuries

sprained ankle

February 07, 2024

Kansas City, Kan. — Injuries happen around the clock, and The University of Kansas Health System wants to make sure you can get the best advice for how and where to get treatment. We’ve partnered with HURT!, a mobile application you can access after hours to get free injury advice from orthopedic specialists.

If you – or your child – suffer a sprain, strain or fracture nights or weekends, go to PoweredByHurt.com/KansasHealthSystem and download the application to your mobile phone on iOS or Android. Once registered, you can send photos, videos and messages to a HURT! orthopedic specialist and get a response within minutes. The HURT! experts will advise appropriate follow-up care with a network partner, a walk-in care location or an ER in an urgent situation. Your information may be shared with the health system, and an orthopedic scheduler will contact you to make an appointment during business hours.

When can I walk in for orthopedic care?

The University of Kansas Health System offers orthopedic same-day care to treat acute orthopedic injuries. You can walk in at 10730 Nall Ave., Suite 200, in Overland Park, Kansas, on:

  • Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-7 p.m.
  • Saturday, 8 a.m.-2 p.m.

There’s also orthopedic same-day care offered by Olathe Health Johnson County Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, a part of The University of Kansas Health System, at 20920 W. 151st St., Suite 100, Olathe, KS 66061. Walk in without an appointment Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

If you experience a fracture, dislocation, sprain or strain during these times, walk in and see an orthopedic expert — no need to make an appointment or use the HURT! app.

Frequently asked questions about HURT!

The best way to get care fast from the health system is to visit the same-day orthopedic clinic. If an injury happens while we are closed, we recommend downloading HURT! for guidance. Here are some answers to commonly asked questions about using the app.

  • If you have an injury after 7 p.m. on a weekday, after 2 p.m. on a Saturday or anytime on a Sunday, we recommend using HURT! and getting advice on whether you need immediate care or can wait until our offices are open to schedule an appointment.

  • No medical advice or treatment is given via the app. HURT! links you with an orthopedic specialist in minutes to help you assess the severity of your injury, navigate the best option or book a follow-up with a qualified specialist near you. Using it may also lead to a call from the health system to schedule an appointment once the office opens.

Please keep in mind that when using HURT! you are not communicating with health system employees. Nothing you share in the app will appear in MyChart or your medical records.

    • Sprains and bruises from sports injuries or falls
    • Aches and pains in joints that haven’t gone away with the usual over-the-counter medications, rest and ice
    • Injuries from minor motor vehicle accidents that do not require an ambulance
    • Tears or pops in the shoulder, elbow or wrist that occur during regular daily movement
    • Pain and swelling around the knee or ankle after twisting, stepping wrong or falling
  • According to HURT!, a member of their team typically responds within minutes. Make sure you have notifications enabled for the HURT! app so you don’t miss a message.
