Cancer Patient Gives Back by Volunteering

Cancer center volunteer Marlene Deal.

Marlene Deal has volunteered at The University of Kansas Cancer Center – Lee's Summit for more than 2 years. In fact, she was the first one to sign up. As a cancer survivor and former patient, Deal had advocated for a volunteer program at the Lee's Summit location.

"My experience with cancer and cancer treatment completely changed my perspective on life," she says. "I really enjoyed visiting with the other patients while we were getting treatment, and I didn't want to give that up when my treatment ended."

Deal has strong connections to the Lee's Summit cancer center. She finished her treatment there, and her daughter, Kristin Balsman, worked there as an infusion nurse for many years.

Deal even donated a special bell for one of the treatment areas so patients can ring it when they finish. She dedicated it to all those on a cancer journey.

"We have an amazing group of volunteers here," says the Lee's Summit practice manager. "Marlene does such a good job that I've asked her to train our new volunteers. That way everyone receives consistent training. Our patients and staff have come to rely on our volunteers. We're so blessed to have them on our team."
