Meet our team
Shawn Long
Vice President, Philanthropy and Corporate and Community Outreach
I love the mission of the health system. I love the absolute focus on the patient. I love how we love people. At any of my previous places of work, I’ve never witnessed the compassion and skill our clinicians, caregivers and staff bring to work every day, and it inspires me. As a nonprofit that doesn’t have a dime appropriated from the state, philanthropy is an extremely important income source for the health system that is getting more important as margins continue to shrink. Presenting funding opportunities to donors that ignite their passion and fuel their imagination is a humbling experience and one I’m grateful to participate in.
Erica Terry
Senior Director, Philanthropy
I work for the health system because, like most, I have watched my family have significant health experiences that have changed my life. I know there is nowhere else in the world that can provide the most exceptional patient care and best health outcomes than The University of Kansas Health System. I want to spend my career helping those who help others and to ensure my family and the rest of my community continue to have access to this incredible resource.
Kirk Schnurbusch
Development Director, Institutional Giving
When you work with individuals who make a difference in people’s lives every day, it makes you want to step up and do your part. I love telling our story, and when donors understand our needs and want to help, I know I am doing my small part. It’s an honor to be part of this great team!
Jeanne Hansey
Development Director, Individual Giving
Working with patients and families whose lives have been transformed by a medical diagnosis is a privilege. Together with the health system, these donors are providing resources to ensure that families in our community have access to the best care possible. I know firsthand what a blessing access to the highest level of care is, and I am grateful to have the opportunity to continue to support our community through my work at the health system.
Laurence Freeman
Development Director, Individual Giving
There’s a quote by Albert Einstein that reads, “It is every man’s obligation to put back into the world at least the equivalent of what he takes out of it.” Likewise, the Jesuits have a motto calling for people educated in their system to live by the ideal of being “men and women for others.” Somewhere in between those 2 noble ideas is my “why.” Serving The University of Kansas Health System in fund development is a very important way for me to give back as a man for others.
Emily Leck
Development Director, Foundations
Supporting my community through my job makes me excited to work hard every day. Additionally, by working at the largest and best health system in the region, I am able to make a positive impact on thousands of Kansas Citians every year.
Rob Wyrick
Development Director, Planned Giving
I’m driven each day by the opportunity to help people. I get to help generous individuals accomplish their philanthropic goals and, ultimately, ensure our community has access to comprehensive, world-class healthcare close to home.
Rachel McCawley
Associate Development Director, Institutional Giving
The University of Kansas Health System has impacted the lives of many, including my own. I am thankful for the unwavering care my family and I have personally received here. I am honored to be able to work with the best-in-class clinical teams, and it is a privilege to engage with such generous individuals who support all we do at the health system.
Brittany Nanney
Associate Development Director, Individual Giving
Providing holistic and compassionate care to our communities is deeply important, and I’m excited to work at The University of Kansas Health System alongside the dedicated healthcare professionals who share this passion. I’m grateful to work with those who share this commitment to create and support the very best for our patients now and in the future.

"Philanthropy, for me, is an opportunity to serve the greater good by helping our generous donors fulfill their charitable goals. My role in learning their individual stories and connecting them to the needs of the health system is extremely rewarding. I know firsthand the leading edge care that occurs here every day saves lives and changes the trajectory of families. It is an honor to do this work."
Robyn Burky
Development Director, Individual Giving
