Time-Critical Diagnosis Education

As the region's premier academic medical center, The University of Kansas Health System serves as a resource to providers in the area with trauma, burn and STEMI education courses throughout the year.

Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC™) was developed by the Emergency Nurses Association for national and international dissemination as a means of identifying a standardized body of trauma nursing knowledge.

• The TNCC™ (provider) course is a 16-hour course designed to provide cognitive knowledge and psychomotor skills. TNCC offers current core-level knowledge, refines skills and builds a firm foundation in trauma nursing. The refresher course is an 8-hour course for nurses with current TNCC certification who need to renew their certification.
• The TNCC™ (instructor) course is an 8-hour course designed to prepare nurses to become TNCC (provider) instructors. The nurse must have successfully completed the provider course prior to attending the instructor course. The instructor course emphasizes appropriate teaching strategies as well as correct evaluation methods.

Trauma, Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery Lecture Series (TLS) is a 1-credit-hour lecture on various topics in trauma. CME is provided. Lecture begins at 7 a.m. in Clendening Auditorium.

The Advanced Trauma Life Support Course (ATLS®) teaches a systematic, concise approach to the early care of the trauma patient. This course is vital to guiding care for the injured patient in emergency department trauma rooms. The course training provides a common language that can save lives in critical situations. This course is designed for physicians caring for injured patients. CME is provided. Nurses may audit.

The Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma (ASSET®) course is cadaver-based and developed for surgeons. The 6.5-hour course provides instruction on surgical exposures in key areas: neck, chest, abdomen and pelvis and upper and lower extremities. The student-to-faculty ratio is low and each student is evaluated on knowledge and technical skills. CME is provided.

Fundamental Critical Care Support (FCCS®) teaches nonintensivists how to manage critically ill patients for the first 24 hours until transfer or critical care consultation can be arranged. The course details how to deal with the sudden deterioration of critically ill patients and prepares house staff, nurses and residents for ICU coverage. CME is provided.

The Advanced Burn Life Support (ABLS®) course is an 8-hour course that provides guidelines for the emergency care of burn patients through the first 24 hours post injury. Lectures, case studies and hands-on practicums allow participants to fully explore all aspects of required care. Testing consists of both a written and practical assessment. The course is open to physicians, nurses, PAs, NPs and EMS providers.

Disaster Management and Emergency Preparedness (DMEP) course teaches planning methods, preparedness and medical management for trauma patients in mass casualty disaster events. Through lecture and interactive scenarios, healthcare providers learn incident command terminology, principles of disaster triage, injury patterns and availability of assets for support during the 1-day program.

Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC™) was developed by the Emergency Nurses Association to establish a standardized body of pediatric emergency nursing knowledge and to improve the care of all pediatric patients. Through interactive learning with scenario-based assessments, participants get comprehensive, evidence-based knowledge about pediatric trauma.
