White Heart Learning and Resource Center

The White Heart Learning and Resource Center is a special learning environment located on the second level of the Center for Advanced Heart Care. It is one of the most comprehensive facilities of its kind in the Kansas City area. Patients, their family members and community members can visit the center to learn about the heart and the importance of heart health.

This unique educational resource was made possible by a gift from Shirley White and her children, Jerry White, Linda White and Sandi Field. The center honors their late husband and father, Lewis White, who received heart care at The University of Kansas Health System.

The center also gathers research information for the health system's doctors, nurses and staff.

Interactive learning

The White Heart Learning and Resource Center is both a reading room and interactive exhibit. Our library features videos, an interactive touch screen that displays 3D models and printed and digital materials on a variety of cardiology topics that you can access in the center.

In addition to the newest technology, resources include books and pamphlets on topics related to heart conditions, heart health, diet and exercise. Patients and family members can browse our selection of dietitian-approved cookbooks that can help you develop healthy eating habits. If hands-on learning works better for you, enjoy the 3D models of the heart, blood vessels and various medical devices.

The resource center has also made some of its heart health education information available online so it can be accessed from anywhere you have an internet connection. Visit our online library of videos and handouts at your convenience.

Experienced nurse coordinator

The full-time coordinator at the White Heart Learning and Resource Center is an experienced nurse with extensive heart care experience. Our coordinator will guide you in using the center's learning tools and can also connect you to other available resources.

Monthly support group

Patients and their families can sign up for our free, monthly cardiac support group. This is a way to share personal experiences and information about heart disease and the stresses it can bring to everyday life. The group meets once a month, virtually, with additional offerings that can be accessed from the comfort of your home.

Sign up to receive more information and heart-related news in our monthly newsletter.

Directions to center

To reach the resource center, take the stairs or elevator in the heart center to the second floor. If you take the stairs, turn left at the top of the staircase, and the alcove entrance to the resource center will be on your left. If you take the elevator, turn to your right when you exit. Before you reach the staircase, the alcove entrance will be on your right, through a set of glass doors. No appointment is necessary to visit the center.

Coffee, snacks and more

Visit the Roasterie Café on the first level of the heart center for a light snack or to take a break. The Roasterie Cafe serves coffee and other beverages, fresh pastries, hot and cold lunch items and other treats. Full-service cafeterias include Bell Café, located on the ground level in Bell Hospital Tower, and D&G Café on the first level of Cambridge Tower A. Bell Café is a traditional cafeteria, and D&G Café operates like a food court.
