Supportive Care Team Fuels Bariatric Surgery Success

April 25, 2024

For years, Jennifer Williams struggled to lose weight. Through hard work and dedication, she lost 100 pounds, but soon regained the weight. That pattern continued until she decided it was time for a permanent change: gastric bypass surgery.

For Jennifer, obesity made her shrink away from the things she wanted to do. “I was constantly putting myself in the background; I didn’t ever want to stand out.”

Jennifer’s physical health was also suffering. “I would have horrible back spasms and leg cramps.” She struggled to stand at work and found interacting with others challenging.

When her primary care doctor suggested gastric bypass surgery, Jennifer dove into research. She attended a free online learning event with The University of Kansas Health System to educate herself about her options for weight-loss surgery.

She was so impressed that she immediately called and made an appointment with bariatric surgeon Sidney Hu, MD to discuss gastric bypass surgery.

Since her surgery, Jennifer’s weight is no longer hindering her. She feels energetic and free. “Since losing the weight, I can do so many more things that I should be able to do.”

From hiking in Colorado with her daughter to enjoying her job more fully, Jennifer is now living her best life.

200 pounds down

Jennifer has lost over 200 pounds after her surgery in June 2022. In turn, her physical health has improved dramatically. “I no longer have leg cramps or back spasms. I’m able to walk as much as I want to.”

To stay active, Jennifer tracks her daily steps. She currently walks approximately 12,000 to 15,000 steps per day.

Jennifer’s mental health has also improved significantly. “I always hated seeing myself in pictures [or] being videotaped. Since the surgery, I’ve been able to adjust my thinking to the point that I’m feeling comfortable in my own skin.”

Ashley Rhodes, PhD, a clinical psychologist at the health system, laments that people who struggle with obesity still feel guilt and shame in our society. “At the health system, we really try to destigmatize and help people know there is support – whether it’s through surgery or a different route.”

Support throughout the journey

Jennifer appreciates the support she received from not only Dr. Hu, but also her entire care team at the health system. From her nutritionist to her counselor to the team of board-certified bariatric surgeons, Jennifer felt encouraged by every staff member.

Both before and after the procedure, Jennifer’s care team navigated the journey with her – helping her adjust her lifestyle, meet her nutrition needs and recover quickly.

In Jennifer’s words: “Bariatric surgery is not a magic wand. I’m so thankful I chose The University of Kansas Health System for my weight-loss surgery because of the support [I received] from the entire team.”

Don’t be scared

After her success with bariatric surgery, Jennifer is proud to be a voice of encouragement to others. “Don’t be scared. Reach out. Do your research. Know that it’s a lifestyle change and just reach out to this care team. They’re a great program, and I highly recommend everyone here.”

Dr. Rhodes praised Jennifer’s dedication, accountability and persistence with her new lifestyle habits. Jennifer is “a beautiful example” for people struggling to lose weight. “If this is something you’re interested in, we want to encourage you that there are supports here at the health system to help you both short- and long-term.”

For Jen, losing weight off her body also lifted weight off her shoulders. And she’s honored to inspire others with her story.
