Cambridge Tower A

Impact Report: 5 years later

Cambridge Tower A rises against a blue sky

In 2017, your generous support turned our ambitious idea into Kansas City’s reality. Cambridge Tower A transformed the city’s skyline and increased our visibility for miles, but there was still work to be done. We opened the tower with space identified, but not yet built out, for some of the health system’s most vulnerable patients, those in the hematologic malignancies and cellular therapeutics program.

Less than 1 year later, our goal came closer to reality when The Sunderland Foundation awarded the largest gift ever to The University of Kansas Health System: $66 million earmarked to finish the remaining 3 levels. This transformational donation not only completed Cambridge Tower A, but it also helped us surpass the original $100 million campaign goal set in 2014.

In December 2021, we successfully transferred the first 70 patients from Bell Hospital Tower to their new beds on levels 8, 9 and 10 of Cambridge Tower A. These levels added an additional 100 beds to the tower’s original 124 dedicated to patients receiving treatment from the health system’s surgical oncology, medical oncology, neurosciences and ear, nose and throat specialists.

Cambridge Tower A has been an essential capital investment enabling the health system to keep pace with the demands of its growing patient population. We are proud to share details demonstrating how the generous support of our donors is translating into exceptional patient care for even the most complex cases. Thank you for impacting the lives of so many who receive world-class care in this innovative, patient-centered facility.

Thank you

Kansas City’s skyline has been forever transformed with the addition of Cambridge Tower A, which opened more than 5 years ago in November 2017. This was a significant milestone in The University of Kansas Health System’s history, one we couldn’t have done without you. Beyond a permanent reminder of our health system’s commitment to provide world-class care to our patients, the tower is but another step toward our goal to improve the health of our fellow Kansans — and the nation.

Even after the project’s scope and budget increased to meet the demands for the hospital’s innovation and excellence in patient care, you rose to the challenge to help our team complete the tower ahead of schedule and, more importantly, about $27 million under budget.

Thank you for choosing to support this important campaign, the health system’s first since becoming an independent body more than 20 years ago. Your commitment to academic medicine helps make Kansas City a destination for healthcare in the region.

Thank you!
