Patients who have had a traumatic injury, a debilitating disease or certain types of surgery may need acute inpatient rehabilitation with an intensive, multidisciplinary approach. At The University of Kansas Health System, we offer leading-edge rehabilitation services in state-of-the-art facilities in Kansas City and Overland Park to help patients improve function, decrease pain and regain their independence.

Who we care for
To be eligible for this service, you must be age 14 or older and diagnosed by a physician as having a condition that requires acute rehabilitation.
We often treat people who have or have experienced the following:
- Spinal cord injury
- Stroke
- Traumatic brain injury
- Trauma or burn
- Amputation
- Musculoskeletal/orthopedic surgery
- Heart problems
- Other neurological issues
Who qualifies for inpatient rehabilitation?
Those who:
- Are medically stable to tolerate therapy
- Have a medical condition that requires a doctor's attention daily
- Require 24-hour nursing care
- Show potential to re-enter and thrive in their community

- Large, inviting visitor lounge with comfortable seating and a fireplace
- Homelike patient dining room where patients can enjoy the company of others
- Fully functioning kitchen and laundry to help patients prepare for self-care at home
- Fully equipped rehabilitation gym with the latest technology for the advancement of function, including:
- Body weight-supported treadmill training with the Woodway Lokomat, Rifton TRAM or Bioness Vector to improve gait performance and mobility
- Fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) and videofluoroscopy for swallow assessment
- Electrical stimulation for upper and lower extremities (L300 Go) for neuromuscular re-education
- Robotics, such as Armeo® Spring trainer, to help rebuild nerve pathways
- Bioness integrated therapy system (BITS) to address visual impairments
- Transitional apartment that allows patients the opportunity to practice their independent living skills before returning home
- A rooftop terrace for outdoor rehabilitation
